When to Use the Past Simple

The past simple is the workhorse of storytelling. It names a completed action at a definite time in the past. Regular verbs just add -ed (“walked”, “played”, “cooked”), while irregular ones follow their own paths that you learn one by one (“went”, “saw”, “bought”, “took”). Questions and negatives use did, which then hands the main verb back to its base form.

Use it whenever the action is over and done: “I visited my grandmother last weekend”. It carries dated events, sequences, and finished stretches of time. “She studied medicine for six years” tells you that period is now closed. “We arrived, ate, and left” lines up three finished actions in order.

The most common error appears in questions and negatives. Once did shows up, it already carries the past tense, so the main verb drops back to plain form. “Did you went?” is wrong; it has to be “Did you go?”. The same goes for negatives: not “She didn’t came” but “She didn’t come”. Say a few of these aloud and the pattern settles quickly.

The other real difficulty is irregular verbs, and there is no shortcut around simply meeting them often. Common ones like go became went, buy became bought, think became thought, and catch became caught refuse to take -ed. Reading and listening are what fix these in memory, not rules.

A quick way to know you want the past simple rather than the present perfect: if you can attach a finished time word such as yesterday, last year, or in 2015, the past simple is your tense.
