IELTS Band Score Explained: How It Works and What You Need

How the IELTS band score works: the 0 to 9 scale, how your overall band is calculated, and what band you need for study, work and migration, with examples.

IELTS is scored in bands from 0 to 9. There is no pass or fail, you simply get a band, and different universities, employers and visa authorities require different bands. Here is exactly how the scoring works and what your target should be.

How the band score works

You get a band for each of the four modules, and an overall band that is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half.

BandLevelMeans
9ExpertFully fluent and accurate
8Very goodOccasional minor errors only
7GoodHandles complex language well
6CompetentEffective, with some errors
5ModestPartial command, frequent errors
Quick tipYour overall band is rounded to the nearest half. An average of 6.75 rounds up to 7.0, but 6.25 rounds down to 6.0. A small lift in one module can round your whole score up.

What band do you need?

GoalTypical band
UK/Australia student visa6.0 to 6.5 overall
Top universities7.0 to 7.5, sometimes higher
Canada PR (varies)6.0 and above per module
Professional registrationoften 7.0+, check your board

Always confirm the exact requirement for your specific university, employer or visa, as they differ.

How the overall band is calculated

Add your four module scores and divide by four. Example: Listening 7, Reading 6.5, Writing 6, Speaking 6.5 = 26 / 4 = 6.5 overall.

Common mistakeAssuming a weak module will not matter if the others are strong.
CorrectEvery module counts equally in the average, and many visas set a minimum per module. One weak band can hold back your whole result, which is why targeting your weakest module pays off most.

To find and fix your weakest module fast, a 1-on-1 tutor assesses your current band per module and focuses only where you need it, which a group class cannot do.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good IELTS band score?

It depends on your goal. Band 6 to 6.5 covers many student visas, while top universities and professional registration often need 7 or higher. There is no universal pass mark, so check the exact requirement for your university, employer or visa.

How is the overall IELTS band calculated?

It is the average of your four module scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking), rounded to the nearest half band. An average of 6.75 rounds to 7.0, while 6.25 rounds to 6.0, so a small lift can round your whole score up.

Is there negative marking in IELTS?

No. There is no negative marking, so you should answer every question, even if you are unsure. Leaving a blank guarantees no mark, while a guess has a chance of being correct.
