When to Use the Present Simple

The present simple is the tense you reach for when something is generally true or happens on a regular basis. The form is easy at the base level: you use the plain verb, and you add an -s only in the third person singular. So we say “I work from home” but “She works from home”. Questions and negatives borrow do or does: “Do you drive to the office?” and “He does not eat meat”.

Think of it as the tense of habits, routines, schedules, and facts. Water boils at 100 degrees. The train leaves at seven. I check my email before breakfast. None of these are happening at the exact moment you speak, and that is the point. The present simple describes what is normally the case, not what is going on right now.

Where learners slip

The classic mistake is dropping that third person -s. Plenty of fluent speakers still say “He go to work” instead of “He goes to work” under pressure. A second trap is using it for actions happening at this moment. If your friend is speaking to you on the phone right this second, you would not say “He speaks to me”; you want the continuous there. A third issue is forgetting that do and does already carry the tense, so the main verb goes back to plain form: it is “Does she like tea?”, never “Does she likes tea?”.

One quick tip that catches most errors: adverbs of frequency such as always, usually, often, sometimes, and never sit before the main verb but after the verb be. “I always arrive early” and “She is never late” both sound natural once you hear the pattern a few times. Say them out loud and the rhythm sticks.
