1. By the time we reached the station, the train ____ already left.

Had is correct because the Past Perfect uses had plus the past participle to show an action finished before another past action. The train left before we reached.

2. Priya ____ never seen a live cricket match before that day.

Had is correct because the Past Perfect shows experience up to a point in the past. Before that day marks the earlier time frame.

3. Choose the correct sentence.

After he had finished is correct because the earlier action takes the Past Perfect and the later action takes the Past Simple. Had is followed by the past participle finished.

4. Fill in the blank: When I arrived, Aarav ____ home.

Had already gone is correct because the going happened before I arrived. The Past Perfect makes the order of the two past events clear.

5. Identify the error: She had wrote the letter before the postman came.

Wrote is the error because the Past Perfect needs the past participle written, not the Past Simple wrote. Had must be followed by the past participle.

6. Fill in the blank: The shop ____ closed by the time we got there.

Had is correct because the shop closed before we got there. The Past Perfect had plus closed shows which action came first.

7. Which sentence correctly shows one past action before another?

We had eaten dinner before the guests arrived is correct because the earlier action uses the Past Perfect. The later action, arrived, stays in the Past Simple.

8. Fill in the blank: Rohan realised that he ____ his keys at home.

Had forgotten is correct because forgetting the keys happened before he realised it. The Past Perfect shows the earlier of two past actions.

9. Choose the correct negative sentence.

Diya had not visited is correct because the Past Perfect negative is had not plus the past participle. The word before points to a time earlier than another past moment.

10. Fill in the blank: They were tired because they ____ all day.

Had worked is correct because the working happened before they were tired, explaining the reason. The Past Perfect links the earlier cause to the later state.

11. Identify the error: By 2019 he already had bought his first house.

Already had bought is in the wrong order, since the natural form is had already bought. The adverb already usually sits between had and the past participle.

12. Which sentence is correct?

The film had started when we reached the hall is correct because the film began before we reached. The Past Perfect shows the first action and the Past Simple shows the second.

13. Fill in the blank: I did not recognise Priya because she ____ her hairstyle.

Had changed is correct because the change happened before I saw her. The Past Perfect explains the earlier action that caused the later result.

14. Transform using the Past Perfect: She cleaned the house. Then the guests came.

She had cleaned the house before the guests came is correct because the first action takes the Past Perfect. Had is followed by the past participle cleaned and the second action stays in the Past Simple.

15. Choose the correct sentence.

No sooner had the bell rung than the students ran out is correct because after no sooner we invert had and the subject and use the past participle rung. This structure stresses that one action followed another very quickly.
