When to Use the Past Continuous

The past continuous describes an action that was in progress at a particular moment in the past. You build it with was or were plus the -ing verb: “I was reading”, “They were playing”. Picture a scene unfolding rather than a single finished act.

It is most useful for setting a background against which something else happens. “I was cooking dinner when the phone rang” gives you a longer action (cooking) interrupted by a shorter one (the phone rang). Notice the pairing: the past continuous holds the scene, the past simple breaks into it. It also works for two things happening at once, like “She was talking while he was driving”.

Choosing the pair correctly

The classic confusion is which verb goes in which tense. The ongoing background takes the continuous, and the sudden event takes the simple. Learners often flip them and write “I cooked dinner when the phone was ringing”, which reverses the picture. Keep the longer, framing action in was or were plus -ing.

Two smaller points. Do not drop was or were: “I reading” is incomplete, and it needs “I was reading”. And be careful with stative verbs again, since they resist the continuous even in the past. “I was knowing the answer” does not work; you want the past simple, “I knew the answer”.

A helpful mental image: the past continuous is the setting of a photograph, everything that was already going on, and the past simple is the flash that captures one instant. It is also worth remembering that this tense answers the question of what was happening rather than what happened once, so a sentence like “At eight last night I was watching a film” describes the middle of an activity, not its beginning or end. Were you sleeping is correct because you always takes were, and the -ing form follows. This is the Past Continuous question form.

6. Identify the error: Rohan was play cricket at five in the evening.

Was play is the error because the Past Continuous needs the -ing form, so it should be was playing. Was must be followed by a verb ending in -ing.

7. Fill in the blank: While we ____ for the bus, it started to drizzle.

Were waiting is correct because we is plural and the waiting was in progress. The Past Continuous sets the scene for the sudden drizzle.

8. Choose the correct sentence combining two past actions.

I was reading when the lights went off is correct because the longer action uses Past Continuous and the sudden action uses Past Simple. This is the common pattern for interrupted actions.

9. Fill in the blank: This time last week, Diya ____ across Bengaluru in an auto.

Was travelling is correct because at a specific past moment the action was ongoing. Diya is singular, so we use was with the -ing form.

10. Which sentence correctly shows two actions happening at the same time?

Both clauses use the Past Continuous because the two actions were in progress together. Was plus the -ing form appears in each part.

11. Identify the error: The children were make a lot of noise during the function.

Were make is the error because the verb must end in -ing, giving were making. The Past Continuous always uses the -ing form after was or were.

12. Fill in the blank: I dropped the plate because I ____ carefully.

Was not looking is correct because the negative Past Continuous is was not plus the -ing form. It describes an ongoing state that was missing at that time.

13. Choose the correct sentence.

What were you doing is correct because you takes were and the -ing form follows in the question. The word order places were before the subject.

14. Transform to Past Continuous: The shopkeeper counts the money.

Was counting is correct because shopkeeper is singular and the Past Continuous uses was plus the -ing form. This shows the counting as an action in progress in the past.

15. Which sentence is correct? Note the stative verb.

I knew the answer is correct because know is a stative verb and is not normally used in the continuous form. Stative verbs like know, want and believe take the Past Simple instead.
