UK Skilled Worker Visa Points Checker
The UK Skilled Worker visa needs 70 points. Fifty are mandatory, then you add 20 more from a tradeable option. Tick what applies to you.
How the UK Skilled Worker Points Work
The UK Skilled Worker visa is not a competitive pool like Canada or Australia. It is a fixed checklist. You need exactly 70 points, and they come in two parts. Fifty points are mandatory and cannot be traded away, then you make up the final 20 from a set of options.
The three mandatory items are a job offer from a Home Office approved sponsor, a role at the required skill level of RQF 3 or above, and English at level B1. B1 is roughly IELTS 4.0 in each skill, so the language bar here is lower than for study routes, but you still have to prove it with an approved test unless you are exempt.
The last 20 points are tradeable. The common route is a salary that meets both the general threshold and the going rate for the job. If your salary is a little lower, you can still reach 20 through options such as a relevant PhD, a shortage or eligible role, being a new entrant early in your career, or a health and education role on a national pay scale.
Use the checker above to confirm you reach 70. Because the English requirement is only B1, most applicants clear it easily, but a clean, confident test result still helps your wider application and any later settlement English test.
Common Questions
How many points do you need for a UK Skilled Worker visa?
You need 70 points. Fifty are mandatory: a job from an approved sponsor, a role at the required skill level, and English at B1. The final 20 are tradeable, usually met through your salary.
What English level is needed for a UK Skilled Worker visa?
Level B1 on the CEFR scale, which is roughly IELTS 4.0 in each of the four skills. You prove it with a Home Office approved English test, unless you are exempt, for example as a national of a majority English speaking country.
Can I get the visa without meeting the salary threshold?
Sometimes. If your salary is below the general threshold you may still reach the tradeable 20 points through a relevant PhD, an eligible or shortage role, being a new entrant, or a health and education role on a national pay scale.
Is the UK Skilled Worker visa points based like Australia?
It uses points, but it is not a competitive ranking. You simply need to reach 70 points and meet the other rules. There is no pool where higher scores beat lower ones, unlike Australia and Canada Express Entry.
What is the required skill level for the job?
The role must be at RQF level 3 or above, broadly equivalent to A level standard, and appear on the list of eligible occupations. Your sponsor confirms the occupation code and that the job meets the skill and salary rules.
