I got an email saying there might be a problem with my dorm assignment for the fall. WOMAN: Let me pull up your record. Could you spell your last name for me? MAN: Sure. It’s O-R-T-E-G-A. WOMAN: Thank you, Daniel. Okay, I see the issue now. You applied to stay in Maple Hall again, but that building is being closed for renovation starting in August. The plumbing and heating systems are quite old, and the university decided it was time for a full upgrade. MAN: Oh no. I really liked Maple Hall. It was close to the science building, and my lab starts at eight in the morning. Walking across campus at that hour in winter is not fun. WOMAN: I understand completely. The good news is that we have several alternatives, and I think one of them might actually work better for you. Have you heard of Cedar Court? However, because the university is relocating students due to the renovation, they’re offering a one-time discount that covers most of that difference. You’d pay only fifty dollars more than your old rate. MAN: Fifty dollars for a newer building with a kitchen? That actually sounds like a good deal. Can I sign up today? WOMAN: You can reserve a spot right now, but the formal contract has to be submitted through the online portal by the end of the month. Today I want to talk about a remarkable group of animals that most people have never heard of, but which play an enormous role in the health of our oceans. I’m talking about coral. Now, when many of you picture coral, you probably imagine colorful rocks sitting on the sea floor. But here’s the first surprise. Coral is not a rock, and it’s not a plant. It’s actually an animal, or more precisely, a colony of thousands of tiny animals called polyps. Each polyp is a small, soft-bodied creature, often no larger than the head of a pin. It secretes a hard skeleton made of calcium carbonate, the same material found in seashells and chalk. Over many years, as generation after generation of polyps build these skeletons, they form the massive structures we call coral reefs. Some reefs, like the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia, are so large they can be seen from space. Now, here’s where the story gets even more interesting. Corals have a special partnership with a type of tiny algae called zooxanthellae. These algae live inside the coral’s tissue. Through photosynthesis, the algae produce sugars using sunlight, and they share these sugars with the coral. In return, the coral gives the algae a protected place to live and the nutrients they need. This kind of mutually beneficial relationship is what scientists call symbiosis. In fact, the algae provide as much as ninety percent of the coral’s energy. Without them, most corals would slowly starve. And this brings me to a serious problem. When ocean water becomes too warm, even by just one or two degrees, the coral becomes stressed and expels the algae living in its tissue. Since the algae give coral much of its color, the coral turns white. We call this coral bleaching. A bleached coral is not dead, but it is starving and extremely vulnerable. If the water cools again quickly, the algae can return and the coral may recover. But if the warm conditions last too long, the coral dies. Why should we care? Well, coral reefs cover less than one percent of the ocean floor, yet they support around twenty-five percent of all marine species. Fish, crabs, sea turtles, and countless other creatures depend on reefs for food and shelter. Reefs also protect coastlines from storms by absorbing wave energy, and they support fishing and tourism industries worth billions of dollars every year. So the next time you see a picture of a coral reef, I want you to remember that you’re not looking at a colorful rock. You’re looking at a living city, built by tiny animals, powered by even tinier algae, and essential to life both under the water and on land.

Transcript (revealed after you submit) PROFESSOR: Let’s turn now to a subject that shaped almost every major city in the world: the public park. Today we take parks for granted. They seem like an obvious feature of any city. But the idea of setting aside large areas of open, green land specifically for the enjoyment of ordinary citizens is actually fairly recent, and it grew out of a very particular set of problems. To understand why parks were created, we have to go back to the nineteenth century, during the Industrial Revolution. Cities were growing at an astonishing rate. People moved from the countryside to work in factories, and urban populations exploded. But this rapid growth came at a cost. Housing was crowded, the air was thick with smoke from coal, and there was very little clean, open space. Disease spread easily in these cramped conditions. Reformers began to argue that cities needed what they called the lungs of the city, open green spaces where people could breathe fresh air and escape the noise and dirt. One of the most famous examples is Central Park in New York City. In the eighteen fifties, New York was booming, but it had almost no public green space. A landscape architect named Frederick Law Olmsted, along with his partner Calvert Vaux, won a competition to design the park. What many people don’t realize is that Central Park is almost entirely artificial. The rolling hills, the winding paths, the lakes, even the placement of individual trees, all of it was carefully planned and constructed. Workers moved enormous amounts of soil and rock, and planted hundreds of thousands of trees and shrubs. It looks natural, but it is really a work of art disguised as nature. Olmsted had a strong philosophy about what a park should do. He believed that being surrounded by peaceful, natural scenery could calm the mind and improve people’s health and behavior. Importantly, he designed his parks to be democratic. That is, he wanted them to be open to everyone, rich and poor alike. In an era when cities were sharply divided by class, a public park was a rare place where people from all backgrounds could share the same space. Olmsted’s ideas spread rapidly. He and his firm went on to design parks in many other cities, and his influence can be seen around the world. But I want you to notice something about the underlying logic here. The park was not just decoration. It was seen as a tool, a way to solve social problems, to improve public health, and even to make people better citizens. Whether or not parks fully achieved those goals is a question we’ll return to next week. For now, remember this: when you walk through a city park, you are walking through a nineteenth-century solution to a nineteenth-century problem, one that turned out to be so successful that we can hardly imagine a city without it.
