IELTS vs PTE vs TOEFL: Which Should You Take?
All three get you abroad, so the real question is which fits your country, your strengths and your timeline. Here is an honest comparison, and how we coach each one.
IELTS vs PTE vs TOEFL
All three test the same four skills and most universities accept all three. Here is where they actually differ.
| IELTS | PTE Academic | TOEFL iBT | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Format | Paper or computer, human speaking examiner | Fully computer based | Fully computer based |
| Scoring | Band 0 to 9 | 10 to 90 scale, computer scored | 0 to 120, computer scored |
| Speaking | With a human examiner | Into a computer | Into a computer |
| Results | 5 to 7 days | Around 48 hours | 6 to 10 days |
| Best for | UK, Canada, all-round safe choice | Australia, fast results | USA |
Pick By Your Goal, Not By Reputation
Forget which test sounds most prestigious. Choose by three things: your destination, your comfort with computers, and your timeline.
Going to the USA? Lean TOEFL, it is the home favourite. Going to the UK? Take IELTS or PTE, because TOEFL does not satisfy the UK visa. Going to Canada, especially with PR in mind? IELTS. Going to Australia or want the fastest result? PTE.
On format, if speaking to a human makes you calmer, IELTS. If you would rather speak into a computer with no examiner watching, PTE or TOEFL. And if you need your score fast, PTE wins on turnaround.

IELTS vs PTE vs TOEFL: Your Questions
Which is the easiest, IELTS, PTE or TOEFL?
None is objectively easiest, they suit different people. PTE often feels easier for the computer confident and rewards technique. TOEFL suits strong academic readers. IELTS suits those who like a human examiner. The easiest one for you is the one that fits your strengths, which we assess in a demo.
Do universities prefer one test over another?
Most accept all three, but there are regional leanings. US universities favour TOEFL, the UK and Canada lean IELTS, and Australia leans PTE. Always check your specific university, but as a rule, matching the test to your destination is the safe move.
Which test has the fastest results?
PTE, usually within about 48 hours. IELTS takes roughly 5 to 7 days and TOEFL around 6 to 10. If you are racing an application deadline, PTE’s turnaround is a real advantage.
Can I switch tests if I am not scoring well?
Yes, and sometimes it is the smart move if the format is fighting you. If speaking to an examiner rattles you, switching to a computer marked test can help, and vice versa. Your tutor can spot when a format switch is worth it rather than just more practice.
