The Curious History of the Vending Machine

AThe idea of a machine that hands over goods in exchange for a coin is far older than most shoppers imagine. The earliest known description comes from Hero of Alexandria, an engineer who lived in the first century and wrote widely on levers, pulleys and the tricks that could be worked with air and water. In one of his notebooks he sketched a device that released a fixed measure of holy water when a coin was dropped through a slot. The weight of the coin tipped a small lever, which opened a valve just long enough for the water to flow before the coin slid off and the valve closed again. It was a simple piece of engineering, yet it solved a real problem, since worshippers had been taking more than their share of water by hand. Whether many temples ever installed the contraption is unknown, but the principle he recorded, a coin doing mechanical work, would reappear again and again over the following centuries.

BFor a long time the concept lay mostly forgotten. It returned in a practical form in the late nineteenth century in London, where a man named Percival Everitt patented a machine that sold postcards. Placed on busy railway platforms, it let travellers buy a card without waiting for a clerk. Everitt soon adapted the design to sell envelopes and sheets of writing paper. His machines were popular, but they also attracted the first recorded cases of vending fraud, as some customers discovered that a metal disc of the right size worked just as well as a genuine coin. Manufacturers responded by adding mechanisms that tested the weight and thickness of each coin, an early example of a problem that still occupies engineers today.

CThe device crossed the Atlantic quickly. In the 1880s a chewing gum company led by Thomas Adams installed machines on the platforms of the New York elevated railway, selling gum to commuters. Because these were among the first vending machines many Americans had seen, they helped fix the association between the machine and small, cheap, everyday goods. Confectioners followed, and soon platforms and shop doorways across the country carried rows of glass-fronted boxes offering sweets, peanuts and matches. The machine had found its natural home among impulse purchases, the little things a passer-by buys without much thought. Advertisers were quick to notice, and some machines carried painted signs and slogans that made them among the earliest pieces of self-service marketing on the street.

DPerhaps the most ambitious use of the idea was the automat, a restaurant where entire meals sat behind small glass doors. A diner chose a dish, dropped the required coins into a slot beside it, and lifted out a plate of hot food. Behind the wall, unseen staff refilled each compartment as it emptied. Automats became a familiar sight in several large cities during the first half of the twentieth century. They offered a fast and cheap meal at a fixed price, and for a time they were praised as a democratic kind of dining, since a labourer and a banker paid exactly the same coins for the same plate.

EThe machines changed as technology allowed. Early models were entirely mechanical, driven only by the fall of the coin. The spread of electricity made it possible to add lighting, and later refrigeration, which in turn made it practical to sell cold drinks and perishable snacks. The switch from glass bottles to metal cans in the drinks trade was a quiet turning point, because cans were lighter, did not shatter, and could be stacked and dropped inside a machine far more easily. Each of these steps widened the range of goods a machine could hold and lengthened the time it could stand unattended between visits from the person who restocked it.

FToday the vending machine is most closely linked with Japan, which has more of them per person than any other country. There, machines sell not only drinks and snacks but hot meals, umbrellas, flowers and books. Several reasons are usually offered for this density, among them high labour costs, low rates of vandalism, and a population comfortable with small automated transactions. Elsewhere the machine is changing again, as coins give way to cards and phones and as sensors track which shelves are empty. Some newer machines even suggest a drink based on the weather or the time of day, a long way from a single valve and a falling coin. The coin that once tipped Hero’s lever is slowly disappearing, yet the basic promise of the machine, goods without a shopkeeper, is stronger than it has ever been.

The Return of the Beaver

AFew animals shape their surroundings as thoroughly as the beaver. Two species survive, one in North America and one across Europe and Asia, and both were once common across huge areas. For centuries they were trapped relentlessly, partly for their thick waterproof fur and partly for castoreum, a scented secretion used in perfume and old medicines. By the start of the twentieth century the European beaver had been reduced to a few small pockets, perhaps only a couple of thousand animals in total, and the North American species had vanished from much of its former range. The animal that had done so much to shape northern rivers had almost been erased from them.

BWhat makes the beaver remarkable is its habit of building. Using cut branches, stones and mud, it dams small streams to create ponds deep enough to hide the entrance to its lodge. A single family may maintain several dams along a stretch of water. The effect reaches far beyond the animal itself. Behind each dam the water spreads out, soaking into the ground and forming pools, channels and damp meadows. Dead trees, killed by the rising water, become homes for insects and birds. Ecologists call the beaver a keystone species, meaning that its presence supports a whole community of other living things that would struggle without it. Remove the beaver, and within a few years the ponds silt up, the meadows dry out, and the stream returns to a single narrow channel.

CTo measure these effects precisely, researchers in one study released a pair of beavers into a large fenced enclosure on a small river and watched the site for several years. The fence kept the animals within a defined area so that everything entering and leaving the site could be recorded. Instruments measured how much water flowed in at the top of the enclosure and how much left at the bottom, along with the amount of sediment and nutrients carried by the stream. Because the beavers were the only major change to the site, any difference between the readings could reasonably be linked to their work rather than to some other cause.

DOne of the clearest findings concerned flooding. After heavy rain, water normally rushes down a stream in a sharp peak that can overwhelm land and property lower down the valley. The chain of pools and dams built by the beavers acted as a brake. Water spread into the ponds and wet ground, then drained away slowly over the following days rather than all at once. Measured at the bottom of the enclosure, the flood peaks were noticeably lower and later than those entering at the top. In effect, the animals had built a natural system for holding back and releasing water gradually.

EThe ponds changed the water itself. As the stream slowed on entering each pool, the mud and fine particles it carried settled to the bottom, so that water leaving the site was clearer than water arriving. Some of the nutrients that can harm rivers when present in excess were trapped in the same way. The stored water also mattered in dry weather. During a drought, when the open stream might have shrunk to a trickle, the beaver ponds held a reserve that kept the wetland alive and released moisture slowly into the surrounding soil.

FWildlife responded quickly to the new conditions. Surveys within the enclosure recorded more species of water beetle, dragonfly and amphibian than before the beavers arrived. Fish sheltered in the deeper water, and birds came to feed on the insects that thrived around the pools. The tangle of dead wood and still water, untidy though it looked, offered far more places to live than the plain channel that had been there earlier. Over several seasons the enclosure came to hold plants that favour wet ground, and these in turn drew yet more insects. A landscape shaped by beavers is rarely neat, but it is unusually rich in living things.

GNot everyone welcomes the animal’s return. Where beaver ponds spread onto productive farmland, they can flood fields, block drains and fell valued trees, and the farmers affected understandably object. Managing these tensions has become the central question for anyone planning a reintroduction. Some schemes use pipes to keep pond levels down, or protect individual trees with wire, while paying landowners for the loss of flooded ground. Supporters argue that the wider benefits, cleaner water, richer wildlife and cheaper flood protection, are worth the trouble. The debate is no longer about whether the beaver can survive, but about how people and a returning engineer can share the same crowded countryside.

The Four-Day Working Week: Progress or Illusion?

AThe idea that a full working week might last four days rather than five has moved, in a short time, from the edge of debate to the centre of it. Trials have been run by companies and even a few governments, campaign groups promote it, and surveys suggest that many employees would welcome it. Supporters present it as the natural next step in a long history of shortening working hours, comparable to the earlier move from six days to five. Yet beneath the enthusiasm lies a genuine disagreement about what the change would really deliver, and for whom.

BThe strongest argument for the four-day week rests on productivity. Advocates point to trials in which companies kept output steady, or even raised it, while cutting one day from the week and holding pay unchanged. They argue that a great deal of the traditional working day is wasted on long meetings, needless emails and low-value tasks, and that a shorter week forces everyone to concentrate on what matters. If the same work can be done in fewer hours, they say, the extra day off costs the employer nothing. In my view this claim, though appealing, is often stated with more confidence than the evidence allows.

CA second argument concerns health. Those in favour say that a three-day weekend gives workers time to rest, exercise, see family and recover from stress, and that healthier employees are absent less often and stay in their jobs longer. There is real force in this point. The costs of overwork, from burnout to long-term illness, are heavy both for individuals and for the economy, and any reform that reduces them deserves a serious hearing rather than easy dismissal.

DCritics, however, question how solid the productivity findings really are. Many of the celebrated trials were run by firms that chose to take part because they were already interested, and were often office-based businesses whose output is hard to measure. A short trial may show a burst of enthusiasm that fades once the novelty passes. Without careful long-term study across many kinds of workplace, the critics argue, it is unwise to treat a handful of encouraging results as proof. This caution seems to me entirely reasonable.

EThere is also the awkward fact that not every job resembles an office. A nurse, a bus driver or a machine operator cannot simply compress five days of duties into four by working more efficiently, because their presence is the work. For such roles a four-day week means either hiring more staff, which raises costs, or leaving tasks undone. The reform that looks straightforward for a software company may be far harder for a hospital or a factory, and a policy that ignores this difference would be unfair.

FPerhaps the deepest worry is intensification. If workers are told to produce the same output in fewer hours, the pressure of the working day may simply rise. The long lunch disappears, breaks are cut short, and the missing fifth day is bought with a more exhausting four. Under such conditions the promised gain in wellbeing could turn into its opposite. Whether the four-day week helps or harms depends heavily on how it is introduced, a point its more excited supporters tend to pass over.

GEmployers naturally view the question through the lens of cost. Some see a shorter week as a way to attract and keep staff without raising wages, a benefit that is valued but does not appear on the payroll. Others fear that customers expecting service five or six days a week will go elsewhere if the office is dark on Fridays. The truth is that the balance of advantage differs from one business to another, and sweeping claims that the change suits everyone, or suits no one, are equally mistaken.

HWhere, then, does this leave us? The four-day week is neither the effortless triumph its keenest champions describe nor the fantasy its harshest critics dismiss. It appears to work best in certain kinds of workplace, when it is planned with care and honestly measured, and to work badly when it is imposed as a slogan. The sensible course is not to adopt or reject it wholesale, but to test it patiently, job by job, and to be willing to change course as the evidence comes in. A reform sold as certainty tends to disappoint, while one treated as an experiment can be improved. That is less exciting than a bold promise, but it is more likely to help the people the reform is meant to serve.
