Reading Speed Test
Measure your English reading speed in words per minute and your comprehension, with tips to read faster for IELTS.
Reading Speed Test
Read the passage at your normal pace, then answer three questions. We will show your reading speed and comprehension.
Why Reading Speed Matters in IELTS
IELTS Reading gives you 60 minutes to read three long passages and answer 40 questions. Most people who run out of time do not have a comprehension problem, they have a speed problem. They read every word at the same careful pace, which is fine for a novel but far too slow for an exam.
The average adult reads at roughly 200 to 250 words per minute with good understanding. For IELTS you do not need to read faster than that across the board. You need to read strategically: skim first to grasp the shape of a passage, then scan for the specific detail each question asks about. That combination beats raw speed every time.
Speed without comprehension is useless, and comprehension without speed leaves questions unanswered. The test above measures both, because they only matter together. If your speed is fine but your score here is low, slow down slightly and focus on understanding. If your comprehension is strong but you read slowly, practise skimming and scanning.
Read widely in English outside of practice tests too. The more familiar the vocabulary and sentence patterns feel, the faster you read without even trying.
Common Questions
What is a good reading speed for IELTS?
Around 200 to 250 words per minute with strong comprehension is comfortable for IELTS. You do not need to read faster than an average adult, you need to skim and scan strategically so you spend your time on the questions, not on rereading.
How can I read faster for IELTS?
Stop reading every word at the same pace. Skim each passage first for its overall meaning, then scan for the specific detail each question needs. Reading widely in English also builds speed naturally, because familiar words and structures process faster.
Does reading fast help my IELTS score?
Only if comprehension stays high. Speed lets you finish all 40 questions, but rushing and misreading loses marks. The goal is efficient reading: fast enough to finish, careful enough to answer correctly. This test measures both together for that reason.
Why do I run out of time in IELTS Reading?
Usually because you read every passage slowly and completely before looking at the questions. Instead, understand the general idea quickly, then let the questions guide you to the exact lines you need. That saves the time most people lose.
Is 60 minutes enough for IELTS Reading?
It is enough with the right technique. Sixty minutes for three passages and 40 questions works out to about 20 minutes per passage. Skimming and scanning, rather than deep reading, is what makes that timing comfortable rather than stressful.
