How It Works

How to Build an IELTS Study Plan That Works

A good IELTS plan starts from two honest numbers: where your band is now and where it needs to be. The gap between them, measured in half bands, decides how much work is realistic and how long it will take. Most people underestimate this and then wonder why a fortnight of cramming did not move the needle.

As a rough guide, lifting your overall band by half a point takes somewhere around 60 to 80 hours of focused, corrected practice, not just passive reading. Two half bands is a real project. The generator above uses this to turn your target and your timeline into a weekly hour count, then splits those hours across the four skills.

The split matters more than the total. Because your overall band is an average, the fastest gains almost always come from your weakest skill, so the plan gives it the largest share. Polishing a skill you are already strong in feels productive but rarely changes your score.

Whatever the plan says, protect two habits. Take a full timed mock test every couple of weeks, and get your writing and speaking corrected by someone who knows the band descriptors. Self study can lift Listening and Reading a long way, but Writing and Speaking usually need an outside eye.

Questions

Common Questions

How long does it take to improve IELTS by 1 band?

Improving your overall band by a full point usually takes around 120 to 160 hours of focused, corrected practice, which is roughly 2 to 4 months at a steady pace. A single half band is about half that. Rushing it rarely works.

Can I improve my IELTS band in 2 weeks?

In two weeks you can sharpen exam technique, timing and familiarity, which sometimes adds half a band if you were close. Real gains in ability, especially in Writing and Speaking, take longer. Use a short window to peak, not to learn from scratch.

Which IELTS skill should I focus on?

Your weakest one. Because the overall band is an average of four skills, lifting your lowest skill by half a band moves your total more than improving a skill you are already strong in. The plan above weights your weakest skill accordingly.

How many hours a week should I study for IELTS?

It depends on your gap and timeline, but most successful candidates put in 8 to 15 hours a week. If the generator suggests more than about 25 hours a week, your timeline is probably too short for the target and worth extending.

Do I need a tutor to improve my IELTS score?

Not for everything. Listening and Reading respond well to self study with good materials. Writing and Speaking are harder to fix alone because you cannot easily see your own errors, so 1-on-1 feedback there is where a tutor pays off most.
