How Long Does It Take to Learn English?

By the WizMantra team · 7 min read · Updated July 2026

The honest answer is: it depends on where you start, where you want to reach, and above all, how often you actually practise speaking. But you can still set realistic expectations. Here is a timeline based on what we see with learners every day.

A realistic timeline

These are typical ranges for someone practising regularly, a few hours a week including real speaking.

  • Basic survival English (3 to 6 months): introduce yourself, shop, ask directions, simple conversations.
  • Conversational English (6 to 12 months): hold everyday conversations, handle work basics, speak with some confidence.
  • Fluent, confident English (1 to 2 years): speak easily on most topics, interviews, meetings, presentations.
These ranges assume you are speaking, not just studying. Two years of silent study can leave you less fluent than six months of daily conversation.

The one factor that decides your speed

It is not talent, age or grammar knowledge. It is how much you speak. Two learners can start together, and the one who speaks daily will overtake the one who only reads and watches, every time. Speaking is the skill, so speaking is the practice.

How to learn faster

  • Speak every day, even ten minutes, more than any other single change.
  • Stop waiting to be perfect. Speak at your current level now.
  • Get corrected, so mistakes do not harden into habits.
  • Practise real conversations, not just exercises.

If you want to compress the timeline, the fastest route is daily speaking with a tutor who corrects you live. Our 1-on-1 classes are built exactly for that, and you can also read our guide on how to speak English fluently.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I learn English fast?

Speak every day and get corrected. The learners who progress fastest are not the ones who study the most grammar, they are the ones who speak the most. Daily conversation with feedback beats months of silent study.

Can I learn English in 3 months?

In three months of daily practice you can reach solid basic and early conversational English, enough for everyday situations. Full, confident fluency usually takes a year or more, but three focused months creates a big, visible jump.
