How to Read Your CEFR Level
The CEFR, the Common European Framework of Reference, describes language ability in six levels from A1, a beginner, up to C2, near native. It is built around can do statements, practical descriptions of what you are able to handle, rather than grammar rules you have memorised. That makes it a good way to place yourself quickly and honestly.
This self assessment works from the top of each level down. Because the levels build on each other, your real level is roughly the highest one where you can still do everything described, without gaps below it. If you can manage B2 tasks but stumble on some B1 ones, your dependable level is B1, not B2.
Treat the result as a starting point, not a certificate. A self estimate is shaped by how confident you feel on the day, and speaking often lags behind reading. The only way to fix your level precisely is a proper test or an assessment with a teacher who can probe the edges of what you can do.
Once you know your rough level, you know your rough IELTS band too, and you can set a sensible target rather than aiming blindly.
Common Questions
What is my CEFR level compared to IELTS?
As a rough guide, IELTS 4.0 to 5.0 is B1, 5.5 to 6.5 is B2, and 7.0 to 8.0 is C1. So a self assessed B2 suggests an IELTS band somewhere around 5.5 to 6.5, though only a real test confirms it.
How accurate is a CEFR self-assessment?
It is a useful quick guide, not a precise measure. Self estimates are affected by confidence and by which skill you are judging, since speaking often trails reading. Use it to set a rough target, then confirm with a proper test or a teacher’s assessment.
What CEFR level is fluent English?
Fluent usually means C1 or C2. At C1 you express yourself spontaneously and handle complex professional and social situations. C2 is near native, understanding almost everything with ease. Both are well above the level most study and work routes actually require.
Which CEFR level do I need to study abroad?
Most undergraduate courses ask for B2, which is roughly IELTS 5.5 to 6.5. Stronger universities and many postgraduate programmes want C1, around IELTS 7.0. Always check the specific institution, since requirements vary by course and country.
Can I move up a CEFR level quickly?
Moving up a full level, for example B1 to B2, typically takes a few months of steady, focused practice, not weeks. Speaking and writing usually take longer to move than reading and listening, because they need active production, not just recognition.
