How It Works

How the Australia PR Points Test Works

Australia runs a points based system for its General Skilled Migration visas. You need at least 65 points to submit an Expression of Interest, but hitting 65 does not guarantee an invitation. The government invites the highest scorers first, so in popular occupations the real cut-off is often well above 65.

Age and English carry the most weight for most applicants. The sweet spot for age is 25 to 32, worth 30 points, and Superior English, which is IELTS 8 in every skill or the PTE equivalent, adds 20 points on its own. That is why lifting your English is usually the single fastest way to climb.

Work experience is split into two buckets, one for skilled experience gained in Australia and one for experience overseas. A state or territory nomination adds 5 points for a 189 style visa or 15 points for a regional 491, which is often what pushes a mid range profile over the line.

Use the calculator above to estimate your total, then focus on the levers that move it most. A dedicated 1-on-1 tutor can take your English from Proficient to Superior, which alone is a 10 point jump.

Questions

Common Questions

What is the pass mark for Australia PR?

You need a minimum of 65 points to submit an Expression of Interest for the General Skilled Migration visas. Reaching 65 makes you eligible, but invitations go to the highest scorers, so competitive occupations often need more.

How many points is Superior English worth?

Superior English is worth 20 points. It means IELTS 8 in all four skills, or the equivalent in PTE Academic. Proficient English, IELTS 7 in each skill, is worth 10, and Competent, IELTS 6, scores 0.

Does a state nomination add points?

Yes. A state or territory nomination for a subclass 190 visa adds 5 points. A regional nomination or eligible family sponsorship for a subclass 491 visa adds 15 points, which can lift a borderline profile into invitation range.

What age gets the most points?

Applicants aged 25 to 32 receive the maximum 30 points for age. Points drop after that, so timing your application matters. At 45 and over you score 0 for age, which makes the other factors decisive.

Is 65 points enough to get invited?

It makes you eligible, but not always invited. Because invitations are ranked by score, many occupations have cut-offs above 65. Treat 65 as the floor and aim higher, especially through English and a state nomination.
