Active and Passive Voice: Rules and Examples
Active and passive voice explained: how to form the passive in every tense, when to use each voice, and why active is usually clearer, with examples.
In the active voice, the subject does the action. In the passive voice, the subject receives the action. Both are correct, but they sound different and suit different situations.
| Voice | Example |
|---|---|
| Active | The chef cooked the meal. |
| Passive | The meal was cooked by the chef. |
How to form the passive
| Tense | Active | Passive |
|---|---|---|
| Present | cleans the room | the room is cleaned |
| Past | cleaned the room | the room was cleaned |
| Present perfect | has cleaned the room | the room has been cleaned |
| Future | will clean the room | the room will be cleaned |
When to use the passive
The active voice is usually clearer and more direct, so prefer it for everyday speaking. Use the passive when:
- The doer is unknown or unimportant: My phone was stolen.
- The action matters more than who did it: The results will be announced tomorrow.
- You want a formal, neutral tone: Applications are reviewed weekly.

What is the difference between active and passive voice?
In active voice the subject does the action (the manager approved the leave). In passive voice the subject receives it (the leave was approved). Active is usually clearer and more direct; passive shifts focus to the action or hides the doer.
How do I change active to passive?
Move the object to the front, use the right form of be plus the past participle, and add by plus the doer if needed. The dog chased the cat becomes the cat was chased by the dog. Keep the tense the same.
Is passive voice wrong?
No, it is correct and sometimes the best choice, for example when the doer is unknown or unimportant. It only becomes a problem when overused, which makes writing feel indirect. For speaking, active is the safer default.
