IELTS Writing Task 1: How to Structure It (Academic & General)

How to score well in IELTS Writing Task 1: describing charts in Academic, writing letters in General, with a reliable structure, data vocabulary and common mistakes.

In IELTS Writing Task 1 you write at least 150 words in about 20 minutes. What you write depends on the test: Academic asks you to describe a chart or process, General asks you to write a letter. Here is how to handle each.

Academic Task 1: describing data

You describe a graph, table, chart, map or process in your own words. You are not asked for opinions, just a clear, organised description of the key features.

A reliable structure1. Introduction: paraphrase what the visual shows. 2. Overview: the two or three biggest trends or features. 3. Details: two paragraphs with specific figures and comparisons. The overview is what lifts your band, so never skip it.

General Task 1: the letter

You write a letter, which may be formal, semi-formal or informal, depending on who it is to. Match your tone to the reader.

  • Formal (to a stranger or official): Dear Sir or Madam, … Yours faithfully.
  • Informal (to a friend): Hi Sam, … Best wishes.
  • Cover all three bullet points in the question.
Common mistakeWriting your opinion in Academic Task 1, or forgetting a bullet point in the letter.
CorrectIn Academic Task 1, only describe the data. In the General letter, address every bullet point given, or you lose marks.
Quick tipSpend about 20 minutes on Task 1 and 40 on Task 2, because Task 2 is worth more. Do not overrun on Task 1.

Writing improves only with feedback on your own work, which self-study cannot give. A 1-on-1 tutor marks every piece you write against the band descriptors, one to one, so you know exactly what to fix.
